Birch Green is a small village in south-eastern Essex, deep in the countryside four miles east of Tiptree and four and a half miles south-west of Colchester town centre. Its 'mother village', Birch is now just a tiny hamlet, though one which contains the parish church, half a mile to the north. Adjoining Birch Green to the south is Layer Breton which is, if anything, smaller.
