Northorpe is a village in Lindsey, the northern part of Lincolnshire, about eight miles north-east of the town of Gainsborough. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 126.
Today the parish includes the site of a deserted mediæval village, Southorpe, the population of which declined during the 15th century, and of the church, dedicated to St Martin, which was pulled down in the early 16th century.[1] The site of Southorpe is a scheduled monument.[2]
It is possible that both villages existed at the time of Domesday Book of 1086, as the village of Torp is listed five times, and includes a total population of 40 households.[3]
About the village
The parish church, St John the Baptist, is was built in the 12th century, in limestone, with later additions and a restoration in 1905. It is a Grade I listed building. There are several 17th-century monuments in the church to the Monson family.[4]
At one time the churchyard was said to be haunted by an example of the 'Black Dog' apparition, by the name of the Bargest.[5][6]
Northorpe village hall is a former National school with datestone of 1846. It is a Grade II listed building.[7] The building opened as a school in 1848 and closed in 1932 as Northorpe C of E School.[8]
Northorpe railway station opened in 1848 and closed in 1964.[9]
Northorpe has two Halls: the timber-framed Northorpe Old Hall is a Grade II listed ruin dating from the 16th century,[10] and Northorpe Hall is limestone and yellow brick built house dating from 1872, and Grade II listed.[11]
