Carlisle

Carlisle is a city and the county town of Cumberland, standing at the meeting of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril, ten miles south of the boundary with Dumfriesshire.

Carlisle was a Roman town, Luguuallium, serving the forts of Hadrian's Wall, and in the Middle Ages it was a fortress town guarding the border with Scotland. Carlisle Castle, built by King William II, was in active use until the accession of King James I rendered it redundant.

Today Carlisle is the largest town in Cumberland and its chief commercial centre. (Read more)
