Henley-on-Thames

Henley-on-Thames is a prosperous town on the north bank of the River Thames in Oxfordshire some ten miles downstream of Reading and ten miles upstream of Maidenhead.

The Henley Royal Regatta has become one of the highlights of the social calendar of the upper and middle classes since it was first held in 1839 and in every year since in peacetime. The Regatta was originally a public attraction run by the town council, with a fair and other amusements, but swiftly rowing dominated it as it does today. Originally a single afternoon, by 1986 the Regatta had been extended to five days. (Read more)
